The Play

In a quaint neighborhood of a small town in Madhya Pradesh lives Beni, an erstwhile singer. A self proclaimed mentor, she delves into her knowledge of Indian Classical music, specifically Khusrau’s work, to counsel her neighbours on all matters through interesting vignettes. Challenging her secular views is the fiery bua who lives across the lane. Both Bua and Beni are fond of Fanney, a Muslim boy, who falls in love with a Brahmin girl, Sharda. Both the women are oblivious to the tension brewing in the city and believe that no harm will come to their neighborhood. Till Sharda gets raped…the city explodes with riots……
Khusrau’s references and his poetry become the means to explore a love story; it brings alive a neighbourhood where there is no conflict, only love and lots of music and dance. The narrative attempts to explore the rich texture of secular traditions present in Indian history and its classical music, as reflected in the life and works of Khusrau.
