The play is based on the struggle of the great freedom fighter Bhagat Singh who was executed by the British in Lahore Central Jail on 23rd March 1931.“Mera Rang De Basanti Chola” is the first play on Bhagat Singh produced by a Pakistani theatre group, a long over-due tribute to one of the most influential revolutionary leaders of the independence movement and one of the most charismatic sons of the Punjab. The story of this fearless 23-year old freedom fighter gets intertwined with some other stories of heroic fighters of our freedom. It is narrated by Baba Bhoga, who was a sweeper in the jail and became a close friend of Bhagat Singh. The story is interspersed with folk songs sung in praise of the revolutionary and his comrades during their struggle. It reveals links with the past and the future, the spirit of Bhagat Singh lives on as his last words ‘Inqilaab Zindabad’ still resound in the air of Lahore.
