The Play
The Game of Dice is inspired by an episode from the great Indian epic the Mahabharata, where Yudhishtra pawns and loses his wealth, his kingdom, himself, his brothers and their wife Draupadi in a game of dice. The play presents the game, loss, inner conflict, pain and humiliation, and the final retribution in a dance production drawing from kathakali, with its dramatic and vibrant outlook, chhau with its martial arts spirit and control, and contemporary innovative styles with their elements of creativity and experimentation. In sync with tradition and modernity, the dance forms make alive time honoured traditional values and principles, and the wisdom of messages relevant even today. Although the theme is drawn from the epic, the production is interspersed in various sections with modern interpretations of the characters and their conflicts.
