| In the beginning, God created the Western Ghats in Goa as one of the 12 biodiversity hotspots of the earth. The Goans saw that this was good. And the Portuguese said, "Let there be 700 mining leases awarded in perpetuity to some people." And the Goans saw that this was good. And then the Portuguese said, "Let us help the Americans rebuild Japan after World War II." And the Goans saw the birth of an iron export industry, and the Goans saw that this was good. And then the Japanese said, "Your iron ore is low grade. We get better ore from Australia." And the Goans saw that this was good. And then the Chinese said, "We want to become a super power. We will take your low grade iron ore."And the Goans saw 50 million tons of iron ore exported; and they saw the influx of trucks and barges; and they saw their mountains turn into craters; and they saw their farms and their villages ad their water and their forests disappear; and they saw Rs. 25,000 million enter and the saw that a share of this money could be had by anybody who entered the mining game. And the Goans saw that this was good. |
