The Play
One of the finest tragedies of William Shakespeare, Hamlet is a story of medieval power politics, betrayal, scheming, thirst for revenge and ultimate retribution. Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, meets a ghost that claims to be his dead father's spirit. Through him he comes to know about his father’s murder at the hands of his uncle, motivated by his desire to usurp his brother's throne and also marry his brother's wife. Hamlet, bound by his promise to the ghost who orders him to seek revenge, plans to avenge his father's death. He succeeds in killing his uncle, but is also mortally wounded in a duel and ultimately dies. The play vividly portrays real and feigned madness – from overwhelming grief to seething rage – and explores themes of treachery, revenge, incest, and moral corruption.
