The Play

The play depicts the journey of a group of young people associated with a theatre-group, and working to develop a play as a tribute to Rabindranth Tagore on his 150th birth anniversary. They can do so by selecting one of his texts and transcribing it into theatre, either in a conventional ‘regular’ manner, or by ‘updating’ it. They come to the conclusion that the best way of achieving their aim would be by trying to understand his texts and philosophy with respect to their own lives, spaces and realities. In the course of their journey, their individual lives and thought processes are affected, displaced, and even deconstructed to different extents. Texts like The Red Oleanders, Post Office, Home & the World, Sacrifice, Crisis in Civilization, The Religion of Man, Letters from Russia, and even his songs, find a way into their subconscious and get reflected and refracted in different ways in their thoughts, actions and words. The play takes the form of a transcribed journal and is dedicated to both Tagore as well as our distressed swa-desh (self-space/motherland).
