The Play
Based on the epic battle between Rama and Ravana, the play starts with the Adhyalma Ramayana being chanted at the arrival of every dead body on the battle field. It goes through several incidents such as Vibheeshan’s betrayal of his family and kinsmen; Ravana’s decision to wake up Kumbakarna; Mandodari’s fears about her husband’s life; the deaths of Athikaya, Indrajit and Kumbhakaran; the suspicion of Sarama’s treachery; Malyavan’s advise to Ravana to declare a truce and his rejection of the idea; his decision to perform a yagna at Nikumbilathat would make him invincible, on Mandodari’s advise; Angad’s act of strategic distraction, and Ravan’s final entry into the battle field. A unique feature in the play is that the battles are pictured at intervals with tholppaavakkoothu, the traditional puppet theatre of Kerala.
