The Play

The story of the play unfolds on several planes: direct narration and a play within the play; history and mythology; the visual and the aural; prose and poetry; the print and electronic media. The whole construction is informed by an acute awareness of how present-day forms of communication, though shaped by earlier ones, are now altering them, and by the perception of continuity in a period of violent change and dislocation. Funded by a rich industrialist, a theatre group begins to rehearse a play centering on the sacrifice of a Jain saint, Bahubali, whose colossal statue stands in Shravana Belagola. Half way through the rehearsal, the play-within-the-play, the industrialist loses a court case to his greedier brother, who in turn sells the telecast rights of the proposed production to a US-based TV channel. How this affects the proposed production is depicted in the play alongside the comedy, farce, irony and sanctity of the main festival in all its human and political nuances.
