The Play

Henrik Ibsen’s play Master Builder has been adapted into Kannada as Balura Gudikara. Veeragaase, a traditional folk form of Karnataka, has been introduced in this play with characters portrayed as veerabhadras, who are the followers of Lord Shiva.
The central character of the play is the egotistical Honna, who is terrified of losing his power or place to the younger generation, a fear that leads to great conflict within him. His wife’s childhood home gets burnt down, killing her parents, and takes a toll on her mental health. Meanwhile Honna gains people’s sympathy and builds wonderful temples & becomes Balura Gudikara. Things change when Sakshi, who is also the conscience of every character, visits Honna. She claims that Honna had promised to build her a kingdom, and talks of a time when he defied his fears and climbed to the top of a tower he had built. The play ends with Honna attempting the feat again, only to fall to his death.
It is believed by many that in the character of the protagonist Ibsen was drawing parallels with his own situation as the "master playwright" and the consequences in his own life.
