The Play

Bama’s short story portrays the social hierarchy of gender, caste and class. It tells of the oppression and injustice carried out by the antagonist Gangamma, and the manner in which she ill-treats the several Dalit bonded laborers who work for her. Driven by poverty, one day the Dalit women decide to pluck cotton seeds for their food. Gangamma complains against them and they are arrested by the police. At the police station the inspector asks them for a bribe. Furious at the injustice of the situation, the women exert their own resistance by urinating in front of the police station in protest and defiance of a corrupt, caste-ridden and contaminated system.
Performed by male, female and transgender actors as well as sex workers, the play attempts to perform the resistance of marginality stemming from personal experiences. It represents itself as their time to talk back!
