The Play

Priya Bawari is an adaptation of the play Madhyam Vyayog by Bhasa. It revolves around Bhima and Ghatotkacha’s reunion as father and son, and the events that lead to it. On a fast, Hidimba orders her son Ghatotkacha to bring a man from the forest, so that she can break her fast by eating him. To do so, Ghatotkacha stops a traveling Brahmin family, whose second son, Madhyama, agrees to sacrifice himself for the sake of his family. Events unfold in such a way that Bhima arrives at the spot and asks Ghatotkacha to take him instead of the Brahmin boy, but only after defeating him in a test of strength. Ghatotkacha accepts the challenge and Bhima is defeated. When he is taken to Hidimba, she recognizes him as her husband, and finally, after much convincing, Ghatotkacha also accepts Bhima as his father. Later
Ghatokacha enters the war at his father’s insistence and is killed in battle.
