The play revolves around the chariot of Mahakaal, (Lord of Time/Shiva), that does not move when pushed by Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Baishyas. By virtue of being at the top of the caste hierarchy, these castes suppress those below them, which is why the chariot refuses to budge despite all their efforts. This leads to a freezing, immobility of Time that causes a terrible crisis for the human civilization. The rope of the chariot symbolizes the bond of human relationships. In the course of time these relationships dilute the rope by denying the rights of many and suppressing them. To a certain extent, the chariot is a metaphor for the division of society into different castes and sections. This greatly worries the common people who try to appease the gods in vain. Finally, it is the Sudras who are successful in moving the chariot.
