When Krishna Rai returns to Calcutta after his graduation, he slips on the mud and falls down while getting off the boat, causing the young and vivacious Mrinmayi to break into laughter. Captivated by her, he decides to marry her, little realizing that despite her age, she still reaimns a child in her heart and understanding of life. They get married, but even this does not change her way of behaving and being. Finally, convinced that his wife would never be able to evolve into a mature woman, Krishna Rai leaves her in the village and returns to Calcutta to pursue his studies. And it is this life altering decision taken by her husband that sounds the death knell of Mrinmayi’s childhood and changes her life forever.
