The Play

The play is a research based production that tells the story of Tilka Majhi of Bhagalpur, Bihar, who was the first Santhal leader to organize an uprising against the British. He did so in the 1780s more than 70 years before the first war of Indian independence in 1857. The play highlights his bravery and leadership, and how he and his men operated in the Tilapore forest from where they held British troops at bay for several weeks, before being surrounded. In 1784, after he was finally caught, Tilka Majhi was tied to the tail of a horse and dragged all the way to the Collector’s residence in Bhagalpur, where his body was hung from a banyan tree. An interesting feature of Tilka Majhi is its use of folk dances, folk music and folk paintings. The play also incorporates Mayurbhanj and Purulia Chhau dance.
