The Play

The Gorha, a powerful village head, has the entire village at his beck and call. With his formidable ally, the gun, he is able to wield an iron-like grip over the simple village folk, who because of their fear of the gun’s destructive power, start considering him a God, the Dhum Dhum Devaru. And so, the Gorha rules the village with the tyranny of an absolute monarch. This situation is disturbed by the arrival of Basanna, a young rebel, whose father the Gorha is suspected of having murdered over a land dispute, and who organizes the youth of the village to rise against the Gorha. Meanwhile, the Gorthi (Gorha's wife) immerses herself in rituals and prayers to have a child, because , although her husband pretends to lead to very active sexual life, he is actially impotent. During the festival of Jokumarswami, the Gorthi learns of the powers of the Gods to fulfil her wishes, and mixes the sacrificial ingredient in the Gorha’s food. But this food is mistakenly consumed by Basanna. The powers of the gods work and he and the Gorthi become lovers. The news of his wife's pregnancy and the love between Basanna and the Gorthi reaches the Gorha and he, along with his henchmen, waylays Basanna and murders him.
